Fall Essentials: Quilted Vests and Jackets

This is the first post from monthly contributor Grant HarrisThe items featured in this post are available at our Madison Avenue and Streets of Georgetown locations. They are coming soon to www.hickeyfreeman.com.

Fall is a time for layers. It is a time to layer on pieces in order to face the elements in warmth and style. Just as the wax on a car or the paint on a shed, the top coat completes the layers underneath. It’s the last touch that gets the most attention. The same applies to your outwear pieces for fall. This month, we explore the advantages of quilted outwear in the form of vests and jackets. Not your grandmother’s quilt, that was so thick and heavy it could have been a stand-in for body armor. We’re talking about the lightweight, functional, stylish but still warm, pieces that any man can dress up or down. Let’s get layered.

Vests

Hickey Freeman Reversible Cashmere Herringbone Vest with Suede Detail, $995

If you’re just dipping your toe into the quilted game, a vest is the way to go. A vest allows for maximum movement and freedom in the arms (or lack thereof) while keeping the most vital part of your body warm. For maximum utility we recommend going for a model with both buttons and a zipper, like the Hickey Freeman Reversible Cashmere Herringbone Vest with Suede Detail, $995. The reversible quality makes it more versatile, as it gives you two looks.

For a clean and minimalist look, go for a vest with only a zipper, like the Hickey Freeman Sterling Collection Navy Quilted Vest with Suede Patch Detail, $395. Keep in mind that the more bells and whistles, the more casual and less formal it is. But no matter, you won’t be wearing your quilted vest over your tux anyway.

Jackets

Hickey Freeman Lightweight Quilted Jacket with Suede Detail, $695, in Navy, Orange, Green and Black (not shown)

Quilted jackets are the big brother of vests. Inherently longer and with set-in or raglan sleeves, they provide the same function but in a different form. They’re easier to dress up than their smaller brothers and ultimately more ubiquitous due to their nature. The Hickey Freeman Lightweight Quilted Jacket with Suede Detail, $695, has more pockets for utility and a have stand-up collars lined in suede for comfort and style. The jacket is just as light as a vests but offer more coverage in the arms and below the buttocks, providing more warmth overall. The jacket comes in three fall shades – navy, orange, and green – as well as black. The green jacket is my choice this season. This quilted jacket has details of a tailored piece, including functional sleeve buttons.
